Accessories for iPhone Photographers

by Christie Houser

With the number of iPhone users constantly growing, so too is the number of people who use their iPhone as a primary camera. It’s been said that the best camera is the one you have with you, making the iPhone tops in that category. The 8 megapixel lens on the iPhone 4S is also impressive in its own right. But sometimes there’s a need for something more. Wide angles, greater zoom, maybe even three dimensional video recording? Here are two products, both of which are currently stocked at MacOutfitters, that meet that need. Additionally, they make great gifts for your tech-savvy Moms, Dads and Grads!

The Olloclip defines itself as a quick change camera lens for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. It gives the user three different abilities; wide angle, fish eye, and macro. The wide angle lens brings more into the field of view than the iPhone’s normal lens. The fish eye encompasses an area of 180 degrees, while also rounding the corners of the photo, like a fish eye. Finally the macro lens gives the photographer a much greater zoom capability, estimated at 10x that of the iPhone lens.

In addition to its functionality, the size and ease of use also set the Olloclip apart from the competition. Simply slide the clip onto your phone with the lens that you want to use facing up, and you’re ready to shoot. At $69.95, the Olloclip is a great option for any iPhone photographer looking for some new angles.

Dot by Kogeto
The Dot is another add on that can bring a new dimension to your iPhone’s camera capabilities. While not quite as practical in day to day use, it certainly serves as a fun novelty device and conversation starter. While the Olloclip is a lens that clips onto the phone, the Dot is more like a modified case attachment. To use the Dot, you download Dot’s free proprietary application, calibrate the camera, and hit record. Instead of just recording what is in front of your iPhone’s lens, the Dot will record everything in the 360 degrees around the phone as well.

The Dot does have some limitations that should be noted. First, the videos captured using the Dot cannot exceed 8 mins. Also, the overall quality of the video is degraded some in comparison with the iPhone’s standard video recording. With that being said, we feel that the ability to record 360 degrees of panoramic video is a feature that is more than worth the minor drawbacks associated with the new technology. The Dot can be purchased for $79.95.

Feel free to stop by one of our locations to take a closer look at any of these products. Come down to Doylestown, Cranberry, Warrington, or downtown Pittsburgh today to add new dimensions and capabilities to your already great iPhone.
